Karena itu PPJ dapat juga dicegah oleh beta-sitosterol (Bombardelli, E., Morrazoni, P., 1997). Jika kelenjar prostat membesar, saluran air seni atau uretra di dekat pintu masuk kandung kemih seolah-olah tercekik. Otomatis pengeluaran air seni jadi terganggu. Makanya, penderita akan sering kencing, terutama pada malam hari. Adakalanya tak tertahankan sampai mengompol segala. Bila jepitan pada uretra meningkat, keluarnya air seni pun makin sulit dan pancaran kencing jadi melemah lalu mendadak berhenti. Akibatnya, timbul rasa amat nyeri pada perut karena air seni yang tertahan. Keadaan ini selanjutnya dapat menimbulkan infeksi pada kandung kencing. Apabila PPJ sudah sedemikian rupa, dan aliran air seni terhenti, untuk mengeluarkan air kecing harus digunakan kateter. Cara ini akan dirasakan sakit oleh penderita. Pada tahap serius, dokter terpaksa melakukan pembedahan dengan memotong kelenjar prostat (Ariawan Soejoenoes, dkk., 1996). Tapi mencegah jelas merupakan langkah bijaksana. Makanya, jika timbul gejala-gejala hipertrofi prostat jinak, seyogianya segera mengonsumsi obat. Tahongai bisa dijadikan pilihan alternatif.
